elite python graphs

There is a community called iconscraper that is currently using a LJ feed to grab any icons posted on LJ, along with any other graphics that are 100x100 or less and 40 kb or less, and hotlinking them in posts. I realize that some icon makers do not mind this, but many of them are upset that they are being posted without credit and being hotlinked.

This program is automated, and therefore is indescriminate in what it grabs - also grabbing personal photos, artwork, fanart, photography, and any other such pictures, as long as they are icon size.

If you would like to protect anything posted on your journal from being "scraped"

Go here: http://www.livejournal.com/admin/console/
And do this for personal journals: set latest_optout yes
and this for communities you are maintainers of: set "for" insertcommunityname latest_optout yes

I have already done so for elitepython, my own icon journal, and my personal journal, and will do so for my writing journal in a moment. Even if you don't mind your icons being scraped, if you post any sort of pictures or personal graphics on your journals, I would recomend using the code on your personal journals. I'm not sure whether or not making them "friends only" will save them.

If you post your icons directly to a community and don't want them to be scraped, I would recomend instead using the admin console on your personal journal, posting them directly to your own journal, and and linking that post to the communities you post icons in.

You may want to look and see if any of your graphics have been scraped, but I wouldn't recomend commenting and asking the person to take them down. It's not working for anyone else, and his/her supporters will probably attack you and twist everything you say around and claim you're whining...it just won't be pretty. The easiest thing to do if you don't want scraping is just use the code.

Also: superbeicons, you might want to use it on pythonlims, because it also grabs from LIMS and icontest communities. sittinonthedock's icon from a recent challenge was scraped.

The latest one, I think, from the Match of the Day sketch. I was looking through to see if any of my icons had been scraped. There's really no way to get it off unless you delete the icon from wherever you have it uploaded and reupload it under a different name.

I'm not really as outraged as everyone else about it, but I am a little annoyed at the bandwidth, and I wish the owner would have the common courtesy to take down icons when people ask.

Though I do find the occasional "OMG I STOLE BANDWIDTH" graphics displayed in place of icons quite amusing, especially when they're HUGE. There was also a lot of porn leaking into the entries for a while, though it seems to have stopped recently.

I hate being so inept with friggin computers. I can't fix the code so it protect my journal *cries*. I'll just have to go delete all of my icons to make sure they didn't get stolen...*Runs off cursing*.

But thanks a lot for the heads-up toaster_phantom.

It won't steal your old icons. It only steals icons when they're posted, so if you've already posted them they won't get stolen unless you repost them or someone else posts them.

And all you need to do is go to the link and type in "set latest_optout yes" and it will exclude your journal from the RSS feed the community uses. :)

alright I believe I fixed the problem although I already deleted my icons @_@, story of my life lol.

I guess now if I go through my journal they won't get stolen by this community, is that correct?

I entered the code for the community, so they won't get stolen from here, but if you post in python_icons or any other such community, it would probably be best to post in your own journal, since I don't know if the mods have used the code.

Ok alright, thanks a lot :). Maybe after I work on my icons more and get them more up to standard, I'll try and join this community :).

It's cool in one way that all the icons link directly back to the post they're from, so you can find who made it, like free advertising I guess.

But it's definitely not cool to hotlink and take without permission.

Where exactl do you type in that code?

Yeah, I kind of have mixed feelings about the community, but better safe than sorry.

You type it in the admin console box here: http://www.livejournal.com/admin/console/ and it will exclude your journal from scrapings.
